Plains Game Areas

Main Camp Aandster – North-eastern Region

Location: +/-5 Hours’ drive north-east of Windhoek

Our home area encompasses 12,000 hectares of own private land, plus a further 25 000 hectares of neighbouring hunting concessions. It is predominantly flat country with mostly sandy soils and a dense to open stand of bush and trees. Farm Aandster is located in prime game territory offering 14 different species of plains game- Giraffe, eland, kudu, waterbuck, blue wildebeest, Burchell’s zebra, oryx/gemsbok, red hartebeest, black wildebeest, impala, blesbok, springbok, warthog, steenbok and duiker. Neighbouring areas also add Damara dik-dik and klipspringer to this list.

Hunting is done the traditional way by locating fresh tracks and following up on foot. Adhering to this pure and ethical approach, our success rate is very high thanks to good numbers of animals.

We also offer bowhunting. Bowhunters can choose to shoot from fixed- (thatched pits) or portable hides or walk and stalk on foot (longer shots in the order of 40 yards).

Accommodation

Client accommodation is in a permanent safari camp situated centrally in the hunting area. It can accommodate six guests in three chalets, each with an in-suite bathroom. Adjoining these is a comfortable lounge and dining area, swimming pool with a deck overlooking a waterhole, frequently visited by waterbuck and kudu, as well as a traditional open-sky campfire boma where the stories of the day’s hunt can be recounted over ice-cold sundowners.

The camp has electricity, as well as telephone-, cellphone- and wi-fi services. Meals are prepared by our full-time kitchen staff, with barbequed steaks provided by our client hunters are an all-time favorite.

Desert Hunting – The Kalahari

Location: 2½ hours’ drive south-east of Windhoek.

This is the land of wide-open spaces and a big sky. Vegetation is sparce along the endless parallel red sand dunes, with scattered camelthorn trees providing some variation and shade. These iconic hardwoods are often burdened with the unbelievably large nests of communal weaver birds.

The area, a privately owned ranch 14 000 hectares in extent, is home to steenbok, duiker, warthog, springbok, blesbok, kudu, oryx/gemsbok and ostrich. Springbok and gemsbok occur in large herds, with good trophies among them.

Hunting

Hunting is done on foot, with shots usually in the order of 150 -250 yards. Despite the open terrain, the sand dunes serve as useful cover and often allow easy shots from elevated ground. This is an excellent area for a first-comer, with a lot to offer.

Accommodation

The hunting camp lies between the dunes, with golden sunset vistas a short stroll away. Guests are housed in two chalets, each sleeping up to four people, with a separate ablution block. Close by is a kitchen and dining area, where traditional Afrikaner meals are served. The camp has electricity, but no phone reception.

Mountain Hunting – The Namib Naukluft Area

SMJ Safaris has the hunting rights on 14 000 hectares, 2.5 hours away from Windhoek in a southwestern direction. This area is situated in a very dry and mountainous terrain that offers the hunter exciting spotting and stalking. Hunting consists mainly of finding high ground spotting for your quarry and calculating a stalk towards the animal. Main huntable species in this area are Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Kudu, Oryx, Springbuck and Klipspringer. The area also offers Leopard and spotted Hyena to be hunted. Due to the open terrain, most shots would be between 150-200 metres.

Accommodation:

Hunters’ accommodation consists out of a 100 plus year old traditionally German Stonehouse, with rooms separate from the main house with ensuite bathrooms and a refreshing swimming pool and sunbathing area.

Dinners are served on the veranda overlooking the Kuiseb River gorge and Gamsberg Mountains. The camp has electricity, as well as telephone, cellphone and wi-fi services.
